Batu Caves Selangor Malaysia – Asia Expedition 10 of 21 Days

During our Asia trip, we visited Batu Caves Selangor Malaysia.  Even though it is surrounded by impressive limestone outcrops, unfortunately, we were thrown off by a very strong stench as soon as we got out of the car.  Do you know what is that smell?

This iconic destination is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, and is dedicated to Lord Murugan (one of Hindu’s deity).  It is busiest during Thaipusam, Hindu festival in Malaysia.

This popular tourist and Hindu worshiper destination can be reached after climbing a steep hill – 272 steps!  It consists of 3 main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines.

After climbing what feels like thousands of steps (really there were ONLY 272..)

and saw lots of macaque monkeys along the way:

We finally reached the top of the caves..  or so we thought…

What, more steps?  I thought we are already at the top!?

On our steep descend:

I started to notice people brining “gifts” to worship and some walked up the steps barefooted:

And also carried bags full of sand to help with renovating parts of the caves at the top:

After what seemed like forever, we finally arrived at the street level.  All that hard workout in the hot Malaysian sun left us desperately seeking something to quench our thirst… we then spotted… COCONUTS

Lots and lots of it!
